Watkins Glen International delivered a dramatic doubleheader weekend in the Mustang Challenge, where strategy, resilience, and a bit of misfortune shapes the outcomes across the Dark Horse and Dark Horse Legends classes.
Race Once began under unusual circumstances, as an incident in qualifying forced officials to set the grid by championship points. That shuffle didn't take long to prove consequential.
In the Dark Horse class, Will Lucas lined up fourth but saw his race unravel just five minutes after the green flag. After showing early pace and settling into rhythm, Lucas was forced to slow before pulling off the racing line due to a coolant line malfunction. In a heads-up move, he managed to park the car safely enough to keep the race under green, but the issue resulted in an early DNF--an unfortunate blow to his weekend.
Up front, Sandy Satullo delivered one of the cleanest drives of the race Starting third, Satullo maintained position throughout, showcasing disciplined, consistent driving with lap times hovering around the two-minute mark. Despite pressure with the pack, he held firm to secure a well-earned third-place finish.
The Dark Horse Legends class featured tight battles as well. Tom Tait, starting second, took a measured approach early on, clearly focused on championship implications rather than unnecessary risks. His patience paid off late in the race when, with just two laps remaining, he mounted a charge to reclaim second. Though he came up just short--crossing the line in third, only three seconds behind--the effort highlighted both pace and strategic restraint.
Joseph Dederichs started strong in third and spent much of the race defending against challengers. While unable to improve, he held off persistent pressure to finish fourth, banking valuable points in a hard-fought contest.
Race Two flipped the script in several ways, with drivers forced to adapt after Race One's outcomes.
Lucas, relegated to the back of the grid following his DNF, put together an impressive recovery drive in the Dark horse field. Methodically working his way through traffic, he climbed into seventh place by the checkered flag - an encouraging rebound that showcased both pace and composure under pressure.
Satullo, staring third once again, looked poised for another podium run. Early in the race, he made an aggressive move down the inside in an attempt to grab second but couldn't quite complete the pass. His race took a turn about ten minutes in when he was forced to pit with an issue. The crew quickly diagnosed a blown front-left tire and executed a change but the unscheduled stop dropped him down the order. Despite returning to the race, Satullo ultimately finished ninth.
In the Dark Horse Legends class, Tom Tait emerged as one of the standout performers of the weekend. Despite and early lock-up that cost him some time. Tait remained firmly in contention, staying glued to the battle for second place. With just under 20 minutes remain, he made his move, diving into Turn 1 to claim the position. Form there, he drove a composed race to the flag, securing second place and capping off a strong points haul across the two races.
Joseph Dederichs, meanwhile, endured a more challenging outing in Race Two. After a solid performance in Race One, he was unable to replicate the same pace and came home sixth in class, still managing to bring the car home cleanly and gather important championship points.
The Watkins Glen weekend proved to be a test of both speed and resilience. Mechanical setbacks and tire issues reshaped the results, but strong racecraft and consistency allowed drivers like Satullo and Tait to remain competitive throughout.
While Lucas will look back at Race One as a missed opportunity, his comeback drive is Race Two offers Momentum heading forward. Meanwhile Tait's steady and strategic approach continues to underscore his championship ambitions in the Legends class.
With the season progressing the lessons learned at Watkins Glen could prove pivatol as the fight tightens across both categories.
