Road Atlanta proved to be a true test of determination, preparation, and teamwork for Wheelhouse Motorsports. From major mechanical setbacks during testing to changing weather conditions and lengthy endurance races, the team faced challenge after challenge throughout the weekend. Despite the obstacles, both the No, 91 and No. 92 cars demonstrated the grit the defines this team, with the No. 91 coming away with a pair of impressive top-five finishes.
The weekend began on a positive note as Brain Smith, Ryan Roberson, and Dan McKeever all logged valuable sear time in the No. 91. The team worked through several set up changes that significantly improved the cars drivability and gave everyone confidence heading into the race weekend.
Unfortunately, the momentum came to a halt after lunch. While on track, McKeever reported the car had become unstable and unpredictable. Upon inspection, the crew discovered that a lower control arm attachment point had broken on the rear carrier.
The damage could not be repaired at the track, and replacement parts were nowhere to be found locally. After contacting several dealerships without success, the team remembered they had a spare carrier back at the ship in Concord, North Carolina, more than three and a half hours away.
With the race weekend hanging in the balance, the lone team member remaining at the shop packed the part and immediately began the drive to Road Atlanta. The replacement carrier arrived at the track shortly after 8:00 PM, and the crew worked late into the night to complete the repair. By 11:00 PM, the new carrier was installed and the No. 91 was ready to continue the weekend.
Mother Nature created another challenge on Friday Morning as nearly three inches of rain fell in just three hours, washing out much of the morning schedule.
The Wheelhouse crew still needed to complete the installation of the No. 91's rear suspension and perform a full alignment following the overnight repair. The team finished the work just as conditions began to improve.
A shortened practice session took place before qualifying was pushed back to 1:30 PM. With the track rapidly drying, the race line was completely dry by the end of the session.
Dan McKeever qualified the No. 91 in fifth position, while Jeff Courtney place the No. 92 in 16th. Following post-session technical inspections, the pole-winning car was disqualified, moving the Wheelhouse Motorsports team up one place each. The No. 91 now in fourth and the No. 92 in 15th respectively.
The remainder of the day focused on giving drivers additional track time. Michael Tosi completed laps in the No. 91, while Jim Farley, Fred Roberts, and Jeff Courtney all shared driving duties in the No.92
Dan McKeever started the No. 91 and immediately put the team in contention, moving into second place early the race.
A well-timed full-course yellow appeared at the end of the opening stint, but an unfortunately timed pit stop left the team a lap down on the field. Rather than give up ground, the driver lineup of Micheal Tosi and Ryan Roberson Steadily worked their way forward through the pack.
By the halfway point, the No. 91 had climbed back into the top ten while remaining just one lap behind the leaders. When McKeever returned to the car later in the race, he continued the charge and moved the team into the top five.
In the closing stages, Tosi took over with one goal in mind: reaching the podium. While battling for third position, he was forced to take evasive action to avoid contact with a Toyota Supra. The resulting spin appeared to damage the front tire, which later failed and forced an unscheduled stop.
The additional pit stop dropped the team back to seventh, but Tosi mounted another impressive comeback drive and crossed the finish line fifth. After post-race technical inspection adjustments, the No. 91 was officially classified fourth.
Considering the adversity faced throughout the weekend, it was an outstanding performance for the entire team.
Race one proved much more difficult for the No. 92 car.
Approximately one hour into the event, the team encountered a failure involving the left rear upright, the component responsible for supporting both the suspension and wheel assembly. The crew quickly went to work once the care returned to the pit lane and successfully completed repairs, allowing the car to rejoin the race.
The persistence paid off as the No. 92 finished 15th after completing the grueling eight-hour event.
Brian Smith took the green flag for the No. 91 in the second race of the weekend, starting from 11th positions. A strong opening stint set the tone before the mandatory 10:00 AM race break observed by the local community.
Micheal Tosi Climbed aboard next and immediately began making progress through the field. A fuel stop under full-course caution provided another opportunity to gain valuable track position.
Dan McKeever took over and combined strong pace with smart race strategy as the No, 91 climbed all the way to second place. Ryan Roberson followed with an excellent stint, matching the pace of the race leaders and keeping the team firmly in podium contention.
Another timely caution period allowed Wheelhouse Motorsports to complete its final driver change under yellow. With only three cares remaining on the lead lap, a podium finish appeared well within reach.
Unfortunately, a miscommunication on pit lane prevented the team from exiting ahead of the pace car, resulting in the loss of a lap. The No. 91 restarted sixth and one lap down, but Tosi once again put together an outstanding drive, recording the team's fastest stint of the weekend while charging back to fourth place at the checkered flag.
While the podium narrowly slipped away, the second top-five finish of the weekend highlighted the pace and potential of the entire team.
The challenges continued for the No. 92 during Race Two.
Roughly an hour into the seven-hour event, the car was involved in a racing incident while attempting a pass through on of Road Atlanta's fastest corners. The resulting damage was significant enough that the team was forced to retire the car from the race.
The final results only tell part of the bigger story.
From an overnight parts run from Concord to Road Atlanta, to late-night repairs, changing weather conditions, and multiple on-track setbacks, the Wheelhouse Motorsports crew was tested at every turn. Through it all, the team remained focused, professional, and resilient.
The crew executed nearly flawless pit stops throughout the weekend, and their hard work allowed both cars to remain competitive despite the obstacles encountered. While strategic circumstances kept the No.91 from reaching the podium on both occasions, the pair of fourth-place finishes demonstrated the pace the team brought to Road Atlanta.
Most importantly, the weekend showcased what Wheelhouse Motorsports is built on. The team now turns its attention to Watkins Glen International, carrying valuable momentum and confidence after an unforgettable weekend at Road Atlanta.
